Her Excellency Betsy Obaseki’s Statement on the 2022 International Day of the Girl Child

Today is the International Day of the Girl Child, a day set aside by the United Nations to draw attention to issues that affect the Girl Child across the world.

It is the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child and this year’s theme is “Our Time Is Now – Our Rights, Our Future”.

For us in Edo State we have been making consistent progress in the issues that affect the Girl Child, particularly with the passing of the Child Rights Law, the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law (VAPP Law), which gave birth to the Edo State Gender Based Violence Management Committee and Sexual Assault Referral Centre and the annual Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament that has provided us a platform to empower the Girl Child in the world of sports.

As we celebrate today I want to call on girls everywhere in the State to maximise the opportunities provided by the State Government to live to their fullest potentials.

For those facing one form of abuse or the other, do not keep silent. Speak up and you will be heard, the SARC Centre has all that is required for you to get justice and it is offered free of charge. We are in the process of setting up SARC Centres in every Local Government Area and when this is concluded it will further ease access to justice.

Girls, you are the best of you that exist. Afford yourselves the opportunities of education as provided in the Child Rights Law, acquire skills through the vocational schools or through the numerous informal opportunities provided in the State and strive to improve daily on your past. You are only in competition with your past.

Your time is now - Your Rights, Your Future.

H. E. Betsy Obaseki,
First Lady, Edo State
