Uzamere: Edo driving more investments to solid mineral sector to rapidly increase GDP growth rate

The Commissioner for Mining, Oil and Gas in Edo State, Hon. Ethan Uzamere has drawn up a list of minerals in Edo hinting that the Governor Godwin Obaseki led administration is unwavering in driving investments into the solid mineral sector.

He listed the minerals to include: Limestone, Marble, Kaolin, Gypsum, Feldspar, Gold, Granite and Dolomite. Others are Gelana, Tantalite, Gemstone, Quartz, Bitumen, Bentonite, Laterite, Sharp sand and River gravel, amongst others. 

He highlighted the fact that Edo came fourth in recent estimates in solid mineral production up from the sixth position previously recorded in the entire nation. 

According to him, the State is utilizing the revenues to deliver dividends of democracy to the good people of Edo State.

He added that the Ministry of Mining, Oil and Gas on behalf of the State Government has on several occasion engaged with Licensed miners, members of the Miners’ Association of Nigeria, Women in Mining, Sand Quarry Owners Association of Nigeria, Heads of Local Government Areas, amongst other stakeholders to push for even more investments.

He noted: '"While Mining still remains in the Exclusive list, we must, in the interim, look at other ways to shore up revenue from the extractive industry as we are keen on diversifying our state economy. We are seeking to drive more investments in the sector in order to rapidly increase our Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate."

He mentioned that Edo is taking the issue of security seriously as he said, "As a State, we are working to ensure peace is sustained in all areas where legitimate Mining activities are taking place and stamp out illegal miners as it has led to the loss of arable farmlands, lives, properties and revenue accruing to the State."

"Because we know that artisanal miners can sometimes get violent which can lead to proliferation of light arms, we have worked strong collaboration with security agencies such as the Nigerian Police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence  Commission (NSCDC) and the very effective community based security architecture brought about by His Excellency, Mr Godwin Obaseki, the Executive Governor of Edo State to stamp out illegal miners," he added.

Recall that Edo recently secured the arrest of some of those illegal miners. Our correspondents at confirmed that Edo was fast becoming uninhabitable for criminal elements because of the approach deployed by Governor Godwin Obaseki.
