BREAKING: Betsy Obaseki sets record, becomes first in history to host 13 team pre-season tournament as official ball is named after her


Edo First Lady, Her Excellency, Mrs Betsy Obaseki has just set a world record as the first in world history to host a 13 team Pre-Season Tournament.

The maiden edition of the Betsy Obaseki Football Tournament in 2021 which featured 12 teams received accolades from the International Community. This year's tournament has made the football community in Nigeria to postpone all activities to enable various team participate in the tournament. Last year, world wide football governing body, FIFA recognized the tournament as official sporting tournament for women.

This year the first lady has gotten an official football named after her called the Betsy ball.


The First Lady declared this year's tournament open at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City amidst pomp and pageantry, with each of the 13 participating teams parading in their traditional colours to mark their presence at the tournament.

The second edition of the competition, scheduled to run between Wednesday, September 7, 2022 and Saturday, September 17, 2022, is focused on driving the government’s campaign against drug abuse.

Welcoming the participating teams, Mrs. Betsy Obaseki, said: “It gives me joy to welcome you all to this year's edition of the annual Betsy Obaseki Women Football Tournament. I assure you that you will have a wonderful time during the tournament.”



She said this year's edition is aimed at complementing the government’s efforts in reducing the incidence of drug abuse in the state, adding, “while we had 12 participating teams last year, this year, we have 13 teams to compete in the tournament. We will continue to grow and ensure that the vision of the tournament which is checking social vices among youths, especially the girl-child is realised.”
