Edo Assembly passes local government and EDSIEC amendment bill

The State House of Assembly has passed the Edo State local government electoral law and Edo State Independent Electoral Commission Establishment Re-enactment Amendment 1 Law 2022, known as the Principal Law.

Earlier, the majority leader, and member representing Ikpoba Okha constituency, Rt.Hon. Henry Okhuarobo in his application called for the suspension of some House rules and resolve into the committee of the whole.

The Speaker, Rt Hon Amb Marcus Onobun harped on the importance of the law, stressing that the amendment is a needed impetus in strengthening the local government system as well as deepening our democracy.

The Speaker thereafter directed the clerk of the house to forward clean copies of the resolution to relevant authorities for assent.

Meanwhile, the consideration of the Bill for a Law to repeal the Edo State development and property agency law 2018 was deferred to a later date for proper deliberation.
This the speaker said would give the lawmakers an opportunity to consult with constituents and other stakeholders.
