Edo State Sports Commission Plays Host to a One-day Athletes Career Training Programme

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Chairman, Edo State Sports Commission, the Permanent Secretary, Edo State Sports Commission, Mrs Sabina Chikere said that, "it is with a heart filled with joy that I welcome you all to the ancient City of Benin, Edo State, the Heartbeat of Nigeria".

"My joy is as a result of the fact that this program which is aimed at stimulating the consciousness of our athletes on developing themselves for life after sports is one that is out athletes takes for granted and the results has not been something to cheer about".

"We have seen some of our celebrated athletes during their active days go into Oblivion and some get to the point of destitution as a result of lack of planning for life after sport".

"It is on record that sport has the unenviable records of having the lowest retirement last longer than the active years of an athletes. Most athletes start engaging in serious sporting activities at an average age of 12, depending on the type of sport. By 19, they are already stars in their chosen event and by 30 they are due for retirement".

Speaking further, the sports commission chairman, Yusuf Ali salute the foresight of the Nigeria Olympic Committee Athletes' Commission for initiating a training programme that will assist athletes to transit from excellence in their performance to better and more fulfilling life after their sporting career, while commending the National Olympic Commission for embracing the International Olympic Commission Athletes 365 career programme through its Athletics Commission.

Speaking, the trainer, Mrs Kadi Kanote who was an African Olympic Champion said, Athletes 365 Programme is designed to empower Athletes to maximise their education and employment opportunities and help them stride confidently into a dual or post sports career.

The training was organised by the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) Athletes Commission, the Programme which is for Athletes aged 16 years and above will be drawn from various Sports.

Delivery his remarks, Hon Frank Ilaboya enjoyed athletes to be focus thriving in their various events.
