ikosamede.com can once again report that the Edo State government has clarified its position on the issue of open prostitution.  The Commissioner for Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development, Isoken Omo made the clarification in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

According to her, government interest in stopping open prostitution is as a result of petitions by residents living in identified hotspots which ikosamede.com earlier reported on. According to her, the areas of Ihama, Boundary and Country Home Roads and adjacent Roads in the areas are to be used as pilot to curb open prostitution. She said the Ministry has received numerous petitions from landlords and residents in the areas concerning the menace caused by open prostitution.

She noted that traffic gridlocks and drugs peddling were part of the public nuisances being constituted by the trade. She also raised concerns of parents who are raising children in that vicinity rife with pimping and drug related activities adding that people were ashamed to say they live in the areas.

Isoken Omo revealed that the nuisances are also being perpetrated in restaurants, barbing shops and pharmacies who use the business as a cover for pimping and prostitution.

She also stated that the fight against prostitution is a joint one being coordinated by Ministry of Physical Planning, Urban and Regional Development, Ministry of Social Development and Gender Issues, Ministry of Roads and Bridges, Department of State Service, Nigeria Police, Edo State Traffic and Management Agency, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, amongst others.

She added that clubs and lounges must install soundproofing to reduce issue of noise pollution as this was also part of some of the petitions. The government however clarified that the issue cannot be totally banned but simply reduced to its barest minimum as it was capable of giving the State a bad name. It was stated that open prostitution goes against the Making Edo Great Again (MEGA) agenda of the Governor Godwin Obaseki led administration.

Recall that ikosamede.com had earlier reported that Edo State government is making moves to eradicate open prostitution and similar public nuisances in the State after an Executive Council Meeting held last week headed by Edo State acting Governor, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu.

The committee was saddled with the responsibility of enumerating the private and commercial houses along identified prostitution hotspots. Hotspots identified at the meeting include Ihama, Boundary and Country Home Roads in GRA.
