The revamping of Edo State College of Nursing Sciences is one of  Governor Godwin Obaseki's landmark projects. The school was moribund with decayed infrastructure and facilities for many years before the Governor assumed office. Through several administrations before the current Governor, the school was left to rot with a very underpaid and poorly motivated staff. Facilities to make learning conducive and optimal were absent.

This was the reason why His Excellency Mr Godwin Obaseki made it a focal point of his manifesto to rebuild, restructure, retool and restaff the school to a status befitting for human learning.

He quickly mobilized contractors to the site and today a visit to the school will afford one a beautiful view with an aesthetically pleasing environment  as well as adequate infrastructure conducive for study. Before now, the school couldn't boast of a functional laboratory. The Governor ensured that the best laboratory was built with quality equipments, workstations,  reagents and a demonstration room replete with beddings and other hospital paraphernalia.

The Governor also restaffed the institution and brought in the best brains to serve in management. This would ensure that the school quickly gained accreditation from the relevant bodies and in no time the school was authorized to take in students. As I write, the school is now functional with students learning in an optimal environment. They have a library which is well stocked with books that are relevant to their field of study as well as a computer library that is also functional and connected to the internet.

The college was commissioned by the National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Sen. Dr. Iyorchia Ayu on March 10th, 2022.

When parents, students and some members of the general public went on a visit to the school recently, they were amazed and full of thanks to the Governor of Edo State for revamping the facility and ensuring that the school commenced academic activities. When admissions were announced, students rushed to pick the forms which were made available online as opposed to what was obtainable in times past where admission forms racketeering was the order of the day.

Today, the system is managed in a transparent and bespoke manner as is the tradition of the Governor of the State to prevent a situation where half-baked graduates are produced in the institution.

According to the Governor, "Health is wealth. The manpower who look after our health should be trained in a befitting environment with the right teaching staff as well as with facilities conducive and adequate for learning."

Students of the institution now have a sense of pride when they introduce themselves as students of the Edo State School of Nursing and Midwifery. They are overjoyed today unlike what was obtainable in the past, where the institution had dilapidated buildings, a lackluster environment and practically non-existent facilities like laboratory, library, seminar rooms, offices, teaching halls, and official school vehicles with which to go on study tours. Those days, the school was reminiscent of a glorified secondary school. But not today, as Governor Obaseki has left an indelible mark in the annals of history in practically all sectors of governance.

As the icing on the cake, the school management not long ago revealed that plans were also in top gear for a collaboration between the institution and Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, New Jersey, United States in areas of programmes and certification.

Leader of the old students’ association, Grace Enoma, recently acknowledged the great works of Governor Obaseki as she affirmed that the College has been upgraded with state-of-the-art facilities to deliver nursing training in line with global standards.

In her words: “We, the old students of the Edo State School of Nursing, wish to express our profound gratitude and appreciation to the Executive Governor of Edo State, His Excellency Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki for the re-opening and upgrading of the school to College of Nursing Sciences with state-of-the-art facilities to deliver nursing training that complies with global best practice.”
