As Nigerians mark this year's Democracy Day, Deputy Governor of Edo State Rt.Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu has tasked the Legislature, the Judiciary, the Media, and Civil Society organizations on the need to safeguard the nation's democracy by serving as its watchdog.
According to him, the defence of democracy is the responsibility of the legislature, the Judiciary, the Press, and Civil Society organizations. We must continue to safeguard our democracy as an ongoing project that must not be abandoned.
"Democracy is a process and not a quick destination"
He challenges the legislature to perform its functions in repositioning the nation to restore public confidence in our democracy. We must Support the judicial system because a lawless nation cannot be said to be democratic.
"Unless the judicial system is allowed to dispense justice according to law, we will continue to witness acts of brazen lawlessness in the nation."
While commending Governor Godwin Obaseki for demonstrating an uncommon commitment to the social-economic development of Edo State and the welfare of the people, the Deputy Governor said " considering the Parlous state of the national economy, Edo State Government held firm, delivering democracy dividends with passion and singleness of purpose.
In his goodwill message to Mark this year's celebration, Comrade Shaibu congratulates Nigerians and the good people of Edo State for supporting Obaseki 's administration, assuring them of more visible infrastructure projects across the length and breadth of the State he said.
