Edo assembly passes bill to amend Audit law

BENIN CITY – The Edo House of Assembly on Monday passed a bill for a law to amend the Edo State Audit law 2021.

Gov. Godwin Obaseki had in request letter to house signed by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Osarodion Ogie requested the amendment of some sections of the principal law.

The majority leader, Hon. Henry Okhuarobo who moved the motion for the house to resolve into committee of the whole, also moved for the suspension of relevant rules to consider the bill.

The member representing ( PDP Akoko-Edo 1),Hon. Yekini Idaiye seconded the motion.

Moving the motion, Hon .Okhuarobo said the amendment was needed to provide for a fixed tenure for the Auditor General of the State.

He explained that the amendment was also to provide for the appointment of either a public or private sector individuals as Auditor General in the state.

Considering the bill at the committee of the whole, the house approved a four-year term for the Auditor General which can be renewed for a further term subject to the confirmation of the house of assembly.

The house further approved the appointment of either a public or private sector individuals as Auditor General in the state.

Section 22 of the principal law was amended to read that the Auditor General must have 15 years professional experience in accounting and audit.

The house unanimously approved the amendment and the bill was thereafter given it’s third reading by the clerk of the house, Yahaya Omogbai.

The Speaker, Rt.Hon. Marcus Onobun directed that clean copies of the bill be forwarded to the governor for his assent.

Meanwhile, The member representing (APC Akoko-Edo 11),Hon. Emmanuel Agbaje, commended the members for their intervention on the security situation in Akoko-Edo and the subsequent release of the kidnapped pupils of gloryland school, Igara in Akoko Edo .

The Speaker, Rt.Hon .Marcus Onobun also commended governor Godwin Obaseki for the prompt intervention which resulted in the release of the kidnapped pupils
