Soldiers in Onitsha, Anambra State, assaulted Nollywood actress Chiwetalu Agu on Wednesday for wearing a shirt with Biafra insignias.

In the viral footage, Agu, 65, is seen wearing a Biafra costume and strolling near a green bus at Upper Iweka Bridge when two armed soldiers pull him to the ground and drag him.

The actor was reportedly in Onitsha on a charity expedition, where he frequently distributes meals to the less fortunate, when he was apprehended by troops.

“At Upper Iweka, he was giving meals with some less fortunate people when the troops approached him and captured him. According to a source, he was “manhandled, arrested, and transported to their barracks.”

Agu, a supporter of the Biafra movement, has criticized President Muhammadu Buhari’s government for marginalizing Igbo in multiple videos.

Even as the South-East continues to experience security difficulties, Nigerian security officials have recently prohibited citizens from wearing Biafra costumes.

On Wednesday, the Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, stated that if the situation in Anambra did not improve, the Federal Government would not hesitate to declare a state of emergency.

The governorship election in Anambra will take place next month.

Meanwhile, the actor’s detention has been verified by the Anambra State Police Command.
