Man burnt as petrol tanker catches fire in Anambra

By Emma Elekwa

A middle-aged man on Friday morning sustained fire burns in a petrol tanker explosion in Agulu, Anaocha local government area of Anambra state.

The victim was said to be transloading inflammable contents with a pumping machine from the fallen tanker to another truck when the incident happened.

A resident of the area, who gave his name as Uchenna Ogene, said the tanker driver was ascending a hill around 1pm on Thursday when the truck suddenly broke down and rolled back into a ditch.

“The tanker was climbing the hill yesterday along the Golden Tulip hotel when it suddenly stopped functioning and started rolling back until it fell into the drainage.’

“We were lucky the tanker didn’t catch fire even though it was carrying fuel. It was this morning that it went up in flames during the transloading.

“If not for the presence of the fire service men who have been around, It would have been something else by now. I suspect it is the pumping machine they were using that caused it,” he said.

Confirming the incident, State Chief Fire Officer, Engr. Martin Agbili said the inferno was brought under control by his men who arrived the scene following a distress call.

He said no life was lost or property destroyed in the incident except the tanker.

He informed that the victim had been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
