Economists under the aegis of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES) Edo State chapter have proffered solution to the economic quagmire Nigeria currently faces, just as they identified poor implementation of economic policies, poor financial inclusion in the country as bedrock to Nigeria's stunted economic development.

This was made known in a public lecture held at the University of Benin on the 28th September, 2021 and organized by the State chapter of the NES in honor of its member, Prof. Mike Obadan, who is a Non-Executive Director at the Nation's apex bank, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Speaking as a guest lecturer at the event, Mr Bello Hassan, the Managing Director, Nigerian Deposit Insurance Corporation, Abuja, said financial inclusion will contribute to the nation's rapid economic development as the great population of the country remains a great asset. He also identified strengthening deposit insurance as a veritable tool to ensure the protection of both customers and financial institutions.

The event also featured presentation of an award of excellence and gift to Prof. Mike Obadan. Man of the moment, Prof. Obadan thanked the body for choosing to bestow him with such an honor.

Speaking, Prof. Mercy Ada Anyiwe, who is the
Chairman, Nigerian Economic Society, Edo State Chapter, said the body has chosen to celebrate icons in the economic profession while they are very much around. She also noted that Prof. Mike Obadan was an excellent choice for the award given his long history of impactful service as both an academic nurturing future economists as well as his service in the nation's apex bank.

Prof. John Ogene, the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Ekehuan campus, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Lilian I. Salami at the event, spoke glowingly of the awardee, describing him as an academic icon.

Chairman of the occasion, Hon. Henry Duke Tenebe (JP), the former Commissioner of Social Development, Edo State and a chieftain of the People's Democratic Party, said the event was coming at the right time, adding that political leaders need to pay attention to what economists in the country had to say to reverse the country's economic downturn. There was also enough to eat and drink as the lecture atmosphere delved into a celebratory one.

A book, managing Nigeria economy in the 21st century was also unveiled at the event in honor of Prof. Mike Obadan.

Earlier, the body paid a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian I. Salami. Prof. Salami noted that the importance of economists cannot be overemphasized given Nigeria's current economic straits. She urged the body to continue proffering solutions that will move the nation forward as that is the primary purpose of thinktanks.
