The atmosphere was ecstatic yesterday 7th March, 2021 as the immediate past 18 council chairmen converged in Benin City for a special thanksgiving service for successful completion of their 3 year tenure. The ceremony had the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon comrade Phillip Shaibu; wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Maryam Shaibu; former Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Damian Lawani; and the spouses of the former 18 LGA chairmen in attendance.

Eghe Ogbemudia who spoke on behalf of the council chairmen in Edo South Senatorial District, thanked the indefatigable and people oriented Governor Godwin Obaseki for giving women the opportunity to serve as she was the only female council chairman nominated and elected during the previous council elections. She said Governor Godwin Obaseki demonstrated the rare mindset of inclusivity of the female gender.

According to her, "Governor Godwin Obaseki did not make a mistake in encouraging women to contest and be elected in the previous council elections. I have been drawing inspiration from His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki on how he is transforming the entire state inorder to replicate same in Egor. Because of this, I have completed and commissioned several projects in Egor inorder to complement the giant strides of Mr Governor.

"I can boldy say that as the only elected female council Chairman in the council elections, I performed extraordinarily well. I also thank God that more women came to join me as council chairman. Governor Obaseki displayed a rare mindset by always encouraging us. I cannot forget in a hurry the immense support the first lady of the state, Mrs Betsy Obaseki also gave to me
. She is a major reason I succeeded in my tenure. Her love for women encouraged me to work harder and also to make me stand out amongst men. I came into the council healthy and I am leaving the council healthy as well. I give God all the glory."

Recall that during Eghe Ogbemudia's presentation of stewardship, the State PDP Chairman, Dr. Tony Aziegbemin named her Madam Projects for the many pro-people projects she carried out.

Eghe Ogbemudia also thanked the wife of the Deputy Governor. According to her, "Today we are celebrating the dogged Deputy Governor, Rt. Hon comrade Phillip Shaibu, but behind every successful man, there is a woman and that woman is Comrade Maryam Phillip Shaibu."

Speaking, the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Rt. Hon comrade Phillip Shaibu, said he was impressed by the work done by the former council chairmen. He mentioned how on several occasions he was invited by the former Egor LGA Chairman, Eghe Ogbemudia to commission projects even when Nigeria was experiencing low revenues.

"Eghe Ogbemudia, or my P.A. as I  like to call her has displayed courage and leadership to be able to do the works she has done. I can recall being invited by her to commission projects in her LGA. I was amazed by the number of projects she was able to carry out," he added.

The Deputy Governor commended the chairmen for doing their best to ensure a better life for their constituents. He said, "we started together, and we will finish together". He also noted the effects of the shortfalls in revenue and the Covid-19 pandemic that took the most part of 2020. He said that, irrespective of those events, they did their best and worked together in unity.

Chairman of Oredo local government area and ALGON Chairman, Hon. Jenkins Osunde, who spoke on behalf of the 18 LGA chairmen also thanked Governor Godwin Obaseki for his constant support, as he noted that His Excellency Governor Godwin Obaseki never tampered with funds meant for the local government councils.

The 18 LGA chairmen and their spouses later took to the dance floor to celebrate the successful completion of their tenure. The chairmen had earlier participated in a thanksgiving service at the St. Paul Catholic Church at Airport Road, Benin City, Edo State.
